"An idyllic Hawaiian fantasy come true, Kona Village is one of those places you can't get enough of. Charming thatched roof bungalows are scattered over the perfectly situated beachfront property either on the beach, in tree houses on stilts, on a tropical lagoon or perched on black lava rock moonscapes. Hales are well appointed with tropical decor, lovely lanais to enjoy the trade winds and abundant birdsong. Our favorite touch is the locally crafted coffee mugs and heavenly Kona coffee, best enjoyed on the lanai watching fellow guests ambling down the sandy path to breakfast.
As the only resort in Hawaii which is all inclusive, Kona Village has an enviable following of families who have been coming year after year for generations, usually staying in the same hale every year. Kids programs are fantastic, with casual options during the day such as tide pool walks and coconut painting perhaps, then a 5:00 start for kids to eat dinner and play games in Keiki Camp while parents get the evening to themselves if they want it.

There are no TVs in the room, and no cell phones allowed outside the hales, making for an uber peaceful vibe. Impeccably landscaped grounds offer sandy paths to get around, and everyone says hello as you pass. it's sort of like tropical summer camp for everyone in first class digs. Our tree house hale faced the ocean side of the property from the front, with gorgeous lava rock views and the looming volcano from the two person spa tub on the backside marble bathroom. The staff simply could not be more graceful and friendly, as if everyone there is an old friend coming home.

Two small but charming beachfront hotels each have a Gilligan's island style bar, where everyone tends to gather in the late afternoon for popcorn and a whistle wetter. Kids can have signing privileges at the Shipwreck Bar where the veteran bartenders who have been there for decades (and know most of the kids by name) serve up frosty "Cookie Monsters and "Big Birds for a non-alcoholic treat.

Lunch and dinner are buffets, which may sound like a turn off, but picture everyone rolling out of bed when they feel like it to help themselves, grab a table by the beach and read the paper till the posse shows up. It actually works well and lets everyone eat what they want, from the world's best bacon and eggs, to a great selection of fresh fruit and everything in between. The lunch buffet is also far above average for a buffet, with plenty of fresh salad makings, much of it locally sourced, and well prepared hot dishes as well. Everyone's favorite thing about lunch is the ice cream sundae table, where fresh, locally made ice cream is offered with tempting toppings. Happily, the gym is a nice one with open air sides and all the latest equipment.

Kona Village is one of those special, juicy places you will want to return to year after year forever. I do!
