Travel + Leisure says..."Opened in 1932, the 210-room Alvear Palace in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood defines Buenos Aires's European-aspiring swish hotel tradition. Afternoon tea in the L'Orangerie restaurant combines the English tea with Argentina's obsession with delicate sweets; chef Jean Paul Bondoux's sea-foam carpeted La Bourgogne restaurant gives Argentine ingredients a high-end French edge; and the design throughout is pure Louis XIV. While the Argentine Sutton family, owners of the Alvear, have not jumped on the minimalist design trend, they are adding LCD televisions and shower stalls to the rooms and have just opened a basement spa and fitness center. Superb service means you'll hardly ever lift a finger: Each guest is assigned a bilingual butler who will do everything from unpacking and pressing their clothes to drawing a bath (complete with amenities from the Parisian designer HermAs) before bedtime."Conde Nast Traveler says..."This Belle Apoque monument "is the best hotel in South America." It's "within walking distance of fantastic shops and Recoleta Cemetery." "All the staff knew fascinating things about the city." Built in 1932, rooms are designed in Louis XIV and Louis XVI style, with silk drapes and Empire-style furniture, along with personal butlers. La Bourgogne serves "out-of-this-world French." -From Conde Nast Traveler

Juicy Tidbits

The 102 rooms and suites have verandas, many fronting the perfectly manicured lawns where croquet and lawn bowling are played. The backdrop is green hills and tall pines interspersed with occasional glimpses of ocean. Conde Nast Traveler says..."An 1893 institution on the Spanish Steps, "it's by far the best location in Rome." Individually designed rooms are filled with art, antiques, Venetian lamps, Limoges porcelain, and trompe l'oeil paintings. In spring 2010, one wing was updated with new decor and larger closets. Imago's panorama of the Eternal City accompanies inventive dishes such as cuttlefish on a "potato cloud." -From Conde Nast TravelerTravel + Leisure says...Grace Kelly honeymooned at this turn-of-the-century palace at the top of the Spanish Steps, and it's still the hotel of choice for many of today's celebs and stylish tastemakers in search of old-world elegance (Gwyneth, TomKat, and Victoria Beckham are all regulars). Renowned for its personalized service, the Hassler is a family affairaa place where guest relations are taken very seriously. The 95 stately rooms are a checklist of classic good taste, with elaborate moldings, gilded furniture, French silks, 16th-century antiques, Limoges porcelain, playful frescoes, and marble, marble, marble, plus mod cons like flat-screen TV's. Imgo, its modern Italian restaurant, has heart-stopping views of St. Peter's Basilica and Rome's terracotta-tiled roofs. And the concierges can accommodate just about any request, including mapping out routes through the Villa Borghese gardens, near the hotel." -From Travel + Leisure
